I grew up reading the books, both the first and the one that followed. After seeing how they altered the ending for the sake of giving Wonka more of a background, I felt as though it was unnecessary. I understand WHY they did it, but it doesn't mean that it was a wise move. It's similar to The Grinch in how they gave him a back story. I understand the desire, but he doesn't NEED a back story...neither the Grinch nor Wonka needs a backstory.
